The bottlenose dolphin is one of the most well-known species of dolphin. It has a torpedo shaped body, a short beak and pointed flippers with a tall dorsal fin on its back. The dolphin is very active and engages in much energetic behaviour including breaching (clearing the water) and bow-riding (riding the swell in front of passing boats). It is a very intelligent animal and has a highly sophisticated echolation system, communicating via a range of sounds.
